Abstract

ABSTRACT Riski Rinaldi Arif (A 121 15 133). This Skripsi entitles “The Effectiveness of Pre-Reading Activities in Improving Reading Comprehension of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 5 Model Palu.” Under the Supervision of Dr. Hj. Sriati Usman, M.Hum The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the use of Pre-Reading Activities is effective in improving Reading Comprehension of Narrative text at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Model Palu. The method of this research is quasi-experimental research design which involved two classes of students as experimental class and control class. The samples were XI MIPA 6 as the experimental class and XI MIPA 1 as the control class. They were selected by using purposive sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher gave pretest and posttest for both groups. The result of the data analysis shows that there is an improvement between the results of the posttests of both classes. The result of the data analysis indicates that there is a difference between the result of pretest and posttest. The mean score of experimental class significantly improves from 67.87 to 79.59. Meanwhile, the mean score of control class slightly increases from 68.09 to 68.86. The data was analyzed statically by applying t-test formula. By applying degree of freedom (df) is 56 and the level of significance is 0.05. It is found out that the tcounted (6.50) is higher than ttable (2.0042) which indicates that the research hypothesis is accepted. In other words, the application of Pre-Reading Activities is effective in improving Reading Comprehension of Narrative text at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Model Palu.
