Abstract

ABSTRACT Wa Ode Izha Mega Putri (A 121 14 156). Using Short Story in Teaching Pronunciation of English Vowel Sounds to Students of SMAN 8 Palu. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education. Department of Language and Art Education. English Education Study Program, under the supervision of Hasan Basri and Erniwati. The objectivity of this research is to find out the effect of using short story on the English pronunciation of eleven grade students of SMAN 8 Palu. This research applied quasi-experimental design. The samples were 32 students; 17 students class XI IPS 1 as the experimental group and 15 students of class XI IPA 1 as the control group selected using cluster random technique. The data were analyzed statically in order to find out the significant difference of the students’ achievement before and after treatment. The mean score of the experimental class on the pre-test was 37.5, while the control group was 37.5. Furthermore, the mean score of the experimental group on the post-test was 85.05, while the control group was 45. In additional the t-counted value was 8.5 Using df 30 and 0.05 level of significance with one-tailed test, it was found that the value of t-table was 1.697. It means that the hypothesis was accepted. In other words, using short story can improve the pronunciation of eleven grade students of SMAN 8 Palu. Keywords: Pronunciation, Vowels, Short Story.
