This study aims to investigate students’ perception on the implementation of
Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in learning writing in the tenth-grade students at
SMA Bala Keselamatan Palu. The subjects or population in this study were 140
students in the tenth-grade students for the 2024/2025 academic year that involved
into 5 classes. The sampling was conducted using purposive sampling technique,
which took 7 students as samples. Data collection techniques used interview
questions and focus group discussions (FGD). This study only focused on students’
perception on their level of participation, the benefits they gained, and the
challenges they faced during the learning process. Based on the results of the
interviews and focus group discussions (FGD), the research objectives were in line
with the findings regarding students’ perception on their level of participation, the
benefits they perceived, and the challenges they encountered on the implementation
of Project-Based Learning (PjBL). Because most students stated that working in
groups made it easier for them to share ideas, improve their writing skills, and learn
more about communicating in English. In addition, several challenges were also
found, including difficulties with English vocabulary and group cooperation.
However, most students still gave a positive perception that Project-Based Learning
(PjBL) was useful and supported their learning process especially in learning
writing. Based on these findings, Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in students’
perception on participation levels, benefits, and challenges can be concluded as an
effective teaching method in learning writing, especially in understanding that
students as are the center of the learning process and how students participate when
guided properly by the teacher.
