The objective of the research is to find out whether the use of riddles technique improve

vocabulary of seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Palu. This research used a quasi-
experimental research design which involved two groups experimental and control groups.

The sample was class VIII E as the experimental group and class VIII A as the control
group. In collecting the data, the researcher used test as the instrument. The test consisted

of pre-test and post-test. Both experimental and control group are given pre-test and post-
test. The experimental group was given riddle technique treatment while the control group

was treated by regular teaching. The result showed that the students’ mean score of the
experimental group was 44.30 on the pre-test and 76.11 on the post-test. Furthermore, the

students’ mean score of the control group was 47.33 on the pre-test and 52.70 on the post-
test. Consulting to the t-table value by applying degree of freedom (df) and 0.05 level of

significance, the researcher found that the value of the t-counted (6.505) is higher than the
t-table (1.670). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. In other words, the use of riddle
technique can improve vocabulary of the seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Palu.
The findings indicate that the riddle technique serves as an effective instructional strategy
for attracting students' attention and promoting vocabulary growth.
