ABSTRACT
Putri Alifia (A 121 19 096) “Reading Difficulties Faced by Students of
English Education Study Program at Tadulako University Academic Year
2023.” Skripsi. English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education
Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tadulako University. Under
the supervision of Rofiqoh and Mashuri.
This research aimed to analyze the reading comprehension difficulties faced
by students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. This
research employed a descriptive quantitative method involving 36 fourth-semester
students. The data were collected through a reading comprehension test consisting
of 30 multiple-choice questions covering four aspects of reading comprehension:
identifying explicit information, making inferences, understanding vocabulary, and
recognizing main ideas and supporting details. The findings revealed that the
students’ experienced different levels of reading comprehension. Among the four
aspects, understanding vocabulary was identified as the most difficult aspect
(39.12%), followed by identifying explicit information (30.32%), recognizing main
ideas and supporting details (16.14%), and making inferences (14.43%). The
students’ obtained an average score of 63, indicating that their average reading
comprehension achievement was moderate. Meanwhile, the overall reading
difficulty percentage was 38% which was categorized as a low level of difficulty.
These findings suggest that although the students’ reading difficulties were not
serious, and they still require attention, particularly in vocabulary development.
Therefore, the teacher should pay greater attention to strengthening students’
vocabulary mastery and teaching affective reading strategies to improve their
reading comprehension.
