PERAN GURU TERHADAP PEMBENTUKAN KARAKTER SISWA KELAS VII DI SMP NEGERI 18 PALU

This study aims to determine the role of teachers in character building among Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 18 Palu, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors they face in this process. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects numbered five people: a Civic Education (PPKn) teacher, a Guidance and Counseling (BK) teacher, an Islamic Religious Education teacher, and two Grade VII students of SMP Negeri 18 Palu. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation and analyzed in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that, first, teachers' role in character building at SMP Negeri 18 Palu is carried out through exemplary conduct, habituation of positive behavior, giving advice and motivation, sharing exemplary stories, and cooperating with parents. Teachers act not only as instructors but also as educators, mentors, and role models for students in daily life, instilling character values such as discipline, responsibility, honesty, politeness, and social awareness. Second, the supporting factors for students' character building include the active role of parents, a conducive school environment, and teachers serving as role models. In contrast, the inhibiting factors include the influence of technology and social media, limited learning time, and the lack of participation from some parents. These obstacles are addressed through sustained cooperation between teachers, schools, and parents.
