IMPLEMENTASI GROUP DISCUSSION UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KETERAMPILAN BERBICARA SISWA SMA NEGERI 1 TORUE

The objective of this research is to prove whether implementing Group Discussion can improve students' speaking skill. This research used a quasi-experimental research design that involved experimental and control groups. The sample of this research was the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Torue; class XI P2B with 32 students as the experimental group and class XI P2A with 32 students as the control group selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using a speaking test that was administered twice, as a pre-test and a post-test. Then, the treatment was only given to the experimental group. The result of experimental group’s pre-test is 39.06 while control group is 39.84. The result of experimental group’s post-test is 54.69 while control group is 48.44. By applying 0.05 level of significance, the researcher found that the value of the t - counted (2.16) is higher than the t-table (2.000). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. It indicates that the effect of implementing Group Discussion is significant. Based on these results, it can be concluded that implementing Group Discussion can improve speaking skill of the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Torue, and it can also be applied by teachers in the teaching and learning process as an effective strategy for developing students' speaking skill because Group Discussion can assist teachers in transferring lesson-related content. It can provide additional, specific details about the object in the content. It may provide imagination about the content of Group Discussion relating to the materials
