The objective of this research is to prove whether or not the use of the shared
reading stategy can increase reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of
SMP Saraswati Tolai. This research applied a quasi-experimental research design.
The population of this research consisted of 77 eighth grade students of SMP
Saraswati Tolai. The sample of this research was selected by using a random
sampling technique. The sample was 30 students of class VIII B as the experimental
group and 32 students of class VIII A as the control group. Both groups were given
a pre-test and a post-test. The instrument used in this research was a reading
comprehension test consisting of multiple-choice and essay questions, which was
administered to measure the students’ reading comprehension before and after the
treatment. The data were analyzed statistically in order to determine the significant
difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of both groups. The result shows
that the students' mean scores of the experimental group on the pre-test and posttest are 31.88 and 75.78. The students' mean scores of the control group on pre-test
and post-test are 66.2 and 46.67. Consulting to the t- table value by applying degree
of freedom (df) (30+32-2= 60) and 0.05 level of significance, the researcher found
that the value of the t-counted (4755.78) is higher than the t-table (1.985) causing
the hypothesis accepted. It means that the implementation of shared reading
strategy can significantly increase reading comprehension of the eightht grade
students at SMP Saraswati Tolai.
