KORELASI ANTARA KEBIASAAN DALAM MENONTON FILM BERBAHASA INGGRIS DAN PENGUASAAN KOSAKATA SISWA KELAS VIII DI MTS DARUL IMAN PALU

This research aimed to determine the correlation between students’ habit of watching English
movies and their vocabulary mastery among eighth-grade students at MTs Darul Iman Palu. This
research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The population
consisted of 65 eighth-grade students, and totalsampling was applied. Data were collected through
a questionnaire to measure students’ habit of watching English movies and a vocabulary test to
measure their vocabulary mastery. The data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment
Correlation with the assistance of SPSS.
The results showed a positive and statistically significant correlation between students’ habit of
watching English movies and their vocabulary mastery. The Pearson correlation coefficient was r
= 0.368, with a significance value of p = 0.001 < 0.05 based on the one-tailed test, involving 65
students. Based on the correlation interpretation proposed by Best and Khan (2013), the correlation
coefficient of 0.368 falls within the range of 0.20–0.399 and is categorized as a low correlation.
The hypothesis testing also showed that the calculated t-value was 3.141, which was higher than
the t-table value of 1.998 at the 0.05 significance level with 63 degrees of freedom. Therefore, the
alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. These findings indicate
that students who tend to watch English movies more frequently also tend to have better
vocabulary mastery, although the relationship between the two variables is relatively weak.
Therefore, watching English movies can be considered a supporting activity for vocabulary
learning and should be combined with other English learning activities.
