PENGARUH FOLKLOR TERHADAP PENGUASAAN KOSA KATA BAHASA INGGRIS SISWA KELAS VII SMPN 19 PALU

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of folklore-based instruction in
improving students’ English vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMPN 19
Palu. The research employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test
and post-test approach. The population consisted of seventh-grade students, with a
sample of 30 students selected through purposive sampling. The data were collected
using a vocabulary test covering nouns, verbs, and adjectives. The results showed that
the mean score of the pre-test was 58.17 and increased to 78.43 in the post-test. The
gain score analysis indicated an improvement of 20.27 points. The result of the paired
sample t-test showed that the significance value was less than 0.05 (p < 0.05),
indicating a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores.
These findings indicate that the use of folklore is effective in improving students’
vocabulary mastery. Therefore, folklore can be used as a contextual and engaging
instructional medium in English language learning.
