The rise in teenage smoking in Indonesia, particularly at SMP Negeri 1 Luwuk, is
driven by family influence, peer pressure, and economic and geographical factors
related to the port; therefore, firm policy interventions are needed to break the cycle
of addiction and prevent a future public health crisis. This study aims to examine
smoking behavior and the factors influencing smoking habits among students at
SMP Negeri 1 Luwuk using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) approach. This
qualitative study employs a case study approach and involves six informants to
analyze students’ smoking behavior through in-depth interviews. The results
indicate that smoking behavior is influenced by: (1) Attitudes, specifically the
perception that smoking makes one appear cool; (2) Subjective norms, in the form
of strong peer pressure; (3) Perceived behavioral control, namely the difficulty of
quitting due to addiction; and (4) Intentions, driven by curiosity. It is concluded
that social factors are more dominant than health awareness; therefore, intensive
supervision and collaboration between schools, parents, and health professionals
are necessary to prevent early addiction.
