Abstract

Adsorption of Cu(II) metal ions was carried out using walnut shell charcoal
(Canarium indicum L.) as the adsorbent. This research aims to determine the
optimum conditions for adsorption of Cu(II) metal ions based on the influence of
charcoal making pyrolysis temperature, charcoal mass and Cu(II) ion concentration.
The bacterial adsorption method was carried out in triplicate to adsorb Cu(II) ions
in solution. The pyrolysis temperature variations used were 350ºC, 400ºC and
450ºC, and the adsorbent mass variations were 0.3 g, 0.6 g, 0.9 g, 1.2 g and 1.5 g
and the Cu(II) ion concentration was from 100 mg/L to 500 mg/L. The pyrolysis
temperature optimization results were obtained at a temperature of 450º C with a
Cu(II) ion absorption efficiency of 38.50%. Charcoal at the optimum pyrolysis
temperature is characterized to determine the quality of the charcoal. The
characterization results show that the charcoal moisture content is 5.61%, the ash
content is 9.40% and the iodine absorption capacity is 643.11 mg/g and the carbon
content is 63.93% as the main constituent of walnut shell charcoal and has a uniform
pore shape on the surface based on SEM EDS analysis results. The optimum mass
obtained was 1.5 g with an absorption efficiency of 99.98% and based on variations
in Cu(II) ion concentration, an adsorption isotherm model was obtained following
the Langmuir isotherm model equation.
