This research aims at finding out the difficulties faced by the students of grade eight of SMPN 2 Toili Barat in comprehending the reading text. This research focused on on analyzing reading difficulties on literal comprehension encountered by grade eight students of SMPN 2 Toili Barat, specifically in determining main idea, understanding vocabulary, making inference, and detail information. The research applied descriptive qualitative. The population was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Toili Barat. It was used total sampling, thus, all the population were taken as the sample of this reserach, 52 students. The instrument of the research was archival document. It was the previous students’ result of reading test. Based on the result of analyzing data, it was found that the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Toili Barat get some difficulties in comprehending reading text. It was proved by their result of the test that there are 144 difficulties or 31.03% to making inference, 134 difficulties or 28.88% to determining main idea, 99 difficulties or 21.34% to understanding vocabulary, and for the detail information, there are 87 difficulties or 18.75%.
