ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the relationship between emotional support and assessment/reward support on smoking behavior among adolescents in the Donggala Community Health Center working area. Smoking behavior in teenagers is a serious health problem that have long-term impacts on their well-being. The research method used was quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 73 teenagers who actively smoked in the area. Data was collected through a questionnaire that measured the level of emotional support and assessment support as well as adolescent smoking behavior. Data analysis reveals that the majority of respondents experienced good levels of emotional support and appraisal support from their families. However, around 43.84% of adolescents reported levels of emotional support that are less than expected. The results of statistical analysis show that there is a significant relationship between emotional support and smoking behavior (p < 0.05), as well as appraisal support and smoking behavior in adolescents (p < 0.05). This research highlights the important role of family support in preventing smoking behavior in adolescents. Emotional support and positive assessments from the family can help adolescents to make healthier decisions regarding smoking. However, the existence of other factors that influence smoking behavior shows the importance of a comprehensive prevention approach, involving various parties such as educational institutions, the community, and further research, to develop effective prevention strategies for adolescents.
