Duong Hai Yen (A 121 16 156). Improving Listening Skills of the Tenth Grade Students through Contextual Video at SMA Negeri 5 Palu, English Education Study Program, Department of language and Art Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University, Under the supervision of Mukrim.
The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of teaching listening by using contextual video to tenth grade students at SMA 5 Palu. The researcher applied a quasi-experimental research design which involved an experimental group and a control group. The samples were X MIPA 1 class, as the experimental group, and X MIPA 3 class, as the control group. They were selected by using a random sampling technique. In collecting the data, the researcher gave pretest and posttest for both groups. The result of the data analysis shows that there is a significant difference between pretest and posttest results. The mean score of the experimental group before the treatment is 10.08 while the control group is 24.37. After the treatment, the mean score of the experimental group is 50.22 and the control group is 27.5. It is also shown that tcounted is 4.64 greater than the ttable 1.68 which indicates that the research hypothesis is accepted. Thus, it can be inferred that the use of contextual video is effective to improve the students’ listening skills.
