IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION OF GRADE EIGHT STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 1 BUNGKU TIMUR THROUGH PICTURE

The problem highlighted in this research was the low reading comprehension of
the second-semester eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bungku Timur. They
needed media that offer to improve reading comprehension. This study
investigates whether pictures can be used effectively on high and low-motivated
students in comprehending narrative texts. The picture itself is a picture that
explains the events of the story which is why the researcher wanted to test
whether pictures can help the students to improve their ability in reading
comprehension or not. The objective of this research is to find out the significant
effect of using pictures on students' reading comprehension in eight grade students
at SMP Negeri 1 Bungku Timur. The research method in this study was
quantitative research with one group pretest-posttest design. It was conducted
from Monday, 11 January 2022 until Tuesday, 8 February 2022. The sample of
this research was a VIII class with 21 students. The sampling of this study was a
purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, the researcher used pretest-and
posttest. At every meeting, the researcher gave different topics. There is a
significant improvement in the result of the pretest and posttest. The mean score
of pretests is (47,85) and the post-test is (75,95). The calculation result of t-test
13,7 and t table with DF-NI, DF-20, level of signification 5% in 1-table 2,08. The
result of the T-test is 13,7> 2,08. So, the arithmetical t-test was greater than 1
table. By having calculated the data, it can be defined that there is an effect what
after applying the pictures for eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bungku
Timur, which can be seen from the students' scores.
