Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Antipyretic is a type of drug that is widely used to reduce fever. Self-medication means the efforts made by the community to overcome complaints or signs of illness before they seek help from a health service center or health worker. From the results of Ellysa's research in 2012, it was found that 54 (64.3%) mothers used Paracetamol, and 30 (35.7%) mothers used Ibuprofen of 84 respondents. Based on the results of research conducted by Rizqah, (2020) stated that Ibuprofen with an average use of 740.77 DDD/1000 KPRJ. Self-medication is the efforts made by the community to overcome complaints or signs of illness before they seek help from a health service center or health worker. Based on survey data from the Central Statistics Agency in 2019, 71.46 percent of Indonesians took self-medication. This figure has continued to rise over the last three years. In 2017, it was 69.43 percent, and in 2018 it was 70.74 percent.

Objective: This study aims to compare the relationship between the public knowledge level and the attitude toward self-medication of antipyretic drugs Paracetamol and Ibuprofen in the Kawatuna community of South Palu sub-district Palu city.

Methods: This study used observational research using a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 102 respondents aged 18-60 who live in Palu city. The data were collected through questionnaires to assess knowledge about self-medication.

Results: The research on the Kawatuna community regarding the knowledge of Paracetamol and self-medication shows that the Kawatuna community has a low level of knowledge of 55.9%, enough knowledge of 40.2%, and good knowledge of 3.9%. While Ibuprofen and self-medication show that the Kawatuna community has a low level of knowledge of 66.7%, enough knowledge of 16.7% and good knowledge of 16.7% and the drug most often used is Paracetamol with a percentage of 84.3%.

Conclusion: The Kawatuna community has a low level of knowledge about self-medication of antipyretic drugs. The drug most frequently used is Paracetamol.
