Abstract

This research aims to find out if applying Contextual Teaching and Learning method is effective to develop writing ability of grade ten students of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palu. It applied a quasi-experimental research design involving an experimental class and a control class. The samples were 22 students of class X Farmasi as the experimental class and 20 students of class X TSM as the control class. They were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected through pretest and posttest that were given to both classes. The results of the data analysis indicate that there was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. The pretest mean score of the experimental class was 37.88 while that of the control class was 50.83. In the posttest, the mean score of the experimental class was 71.21 while that of the control class was 64.17. By applying 40 degree of freedom (df) and 0.05 level of significance, it found that the counted (4.01) was higher than the t-table (1.684). It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted. Thus, Contextual Teaching and Learning method is effective in developing the students’ ability in writing.
