The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the use of guided reading strategy can improve the English reading comprehension of grade ix students of SMP Negeri 15 Palu. The population of this study was grade ix students at SMP Negeri 15 Palu. The researcher chose the sample by using random sampling technique. The samples of this study were the students of class IX A as the control class which amounted to 25 students and class IX C as the experimental class which amounted to 25 students. The data were analyzed statistically to determine the significant difference of students' learning outcomes on the pre-test and post-test. The average value of the experimental class on the pretest was 52.4 and the control class was 57.4. The average value of the experimental class on the posttest was 84.4 and the control class was 62. Using a significance level of 0.05 and degrees of freedom of 48, the researcher obtained the t-count (1.20) higher than the t-table (0.005). This means that the hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, the use of guided reading strategy can improve students' English reading comprehension in class IX SMP Negeri 15 Palu.
