Yola Gelong (A12118207). Improving reading comprehension of the eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Kasimbar. Skripsi, English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, under the supervision of Kamaruddin and Anjar.

The purpose of this research is to find out whether the group discussion method can improve reading comprehension. This method uses a quasi-experimental design using VIII A as the control class and VIII B as the experimental class for the research sample. The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data obtained from tests: pre-test and post-test. Based on the research findings, it showed that pre-test students had problems understanding the questions due to a lack of vocabulary that students knew so that it was difficult to find the type of text and main ideas in reading the questions. In determining the treatment of the group discussion method, students hold discussions with each other which produce a lot of new vocabulary so that they can help students complete the reading questions given. After receiving treatment, the post-test score increased which showed that students experienced reading comprehension through the group discussion method. The pre-test score was 59.1 while the post-test score was 77.3, the difference between the scores from the two tests was 18.2. The results showed that the use of the group discussion method could improve students' reading comprehension at SMP Negeri 1 Kasimbar.
