Abstract

This study aims to find out the level of students' motivation in learning English, in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The research design used in this study was descriptive-qualitative. The study was conducted at SMP Labschool Untad Palu. The sample was 20 students from class IX A who were selected by a simple random sampling technique. The research instruments used to collect the data were questionnaires. The questions used in the questionnaire were adapted from Gardner's Attitude & Motivation Test Battery (AMTB). The result of this study shows that students' motivation level is high, with an average score of 3.95. It also shows that the total mean score of extrinsic motivation (4.0) is higher than the total mean score of intrinsic motivation (3.9). It means that ninth grade students of SMP Labschool Untad Palu are slightly more extrinsically motivated in learning English. However, both students' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations are at a high level.
