PENGGUNAAN SEMANTIC MAPPING UNTUK MENINGKATKAN PENGUASAAN KOSAKATA SISWA KELAS VIII SMP NEGERI 3 SINDUE

The objective of this study is to find out whether or not the use of semantic
mapping can improve vocabulary of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3
Sindue. The focus of this study is on teaching vocabulary especially nouns. It is
countable nouns and uncountable nouns by considering the spelling, the meaning
and the use in context. The researcher used a quasi-experimental as a research
design. The population of this study was class VIII students of SMP Negeri 3
Sindue consisting of 59 students. The researcher used purposive sampling and
took VIIIB as an experimental class with 18 students and VIIIA as a control class
with 18 students. The research instrument was a test which was divided into two
tests (pre-test and post-test). The researcher used SPSS (Statistical Package for
Social Sciences) 25 to analyze the data. This study concludes that semantic
mapping can improve the vocabulary of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri
3 Sindue. It was proven by the mean score of the experimental group was higher
than the mean score of the control group (86.67>78.17). In addition, the result of
sig. (2-tailed) is lower than 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the
hypothesis is accepted.
