Abstract

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of storytelling technique in improving speaking skill of the grade eight students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu. This research used a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test procedures in experimental and control classes. The population was the grade eight students that consists of 45 students, while the sample was thirty students selected using convenience sampling technique, with fifteen students in the experimental class and fifteen students in the control class. The experimental class was given treatment by learning with storytelling during six meetings, while the control class used the conventional method. The result shows there is a significant improvement of speaking skills in the experimental class than those in the control class. This is proven by the results of the students' mean post-test in which the experimental class obtained a higher mean score of 69.33 than the control class with a mean post-test score of 44.67. It can be concluded that the storytelling technique is effective to improve speaking skill of grade eight students at MTs Muhammadiyah Al-Haq Palu.
