PERBANDINGAN KUALITAS TIDUR DAN MEMORI JANGKA PENDEK PADA MAHASISWA PEMINUM KOPI DAN BUKAN PEMINUM KOPI FAKULTAS KEDOKTERAN UNIVERSITAS TADULAKO

Background: Sleep quality is the ability to get the right amount of REM and NREM sleep. Short-term memory is an active information storage system which is temporary. Poor sleep quality causes dopamine neurotransmitter disorders that play a role in memory. Caffeine has an effect on memory through inhibition mechanism of A1 adenosine receptors. The research aimed to determine the difference of sleep quality and short-term memory on coffee drinking students and non coffee drinking students in Medical Faculty of Tadulako University.

Methods: This research is an analytic observational study with cross-sectional design. The sampling technique using total sampling method. Sleep quality was measured using PSQI and short-term memory was measured using Digit Span Test. The data were obtained and then processed by using Spearman correlation analysis.

Result: The results of this research showed that non coffee drinking students had poor sleep quality amounted to 14 men (87,5%) and 22 women (81,5%), while in coffee drinking students amounted to 10 men (90,9%) and 22 women (95,7%), for the average short-term memory of non coffee drinking students amounted to 11 men (68.8%) and 15 women (55.6%), while in coffee drinking students amounted to 7 men (63.6%) and 17 women (73.9%). Based on the results of statistical tests on non coffee drinking students (p = 0.010, r = 0.387) shows that daytime dysfunction has a significant correlation within short-term memory in relationship strength was very weak with positive direction.

Conclusion: There is a difference of sleep quality and short-term memory on coffee drinking students and non coffee drinking students in Medical Faculty of Tadulako University.
