Since Covid-19 outbreak emerges in late 2019, productive activities were
forcefully suppressed on global scale in order to contain the contagion, thus
schools worldwide have implemented online learning to sustain their purpose. The
implication of online learning during this pandemic time has been discussed in
various studies in higher education. This qualitative study aimed to find out both
teachers’ and students’ perception regarding learning English virtually. To obtain
qualitative data, the researcher utilized two research instruments, interview and
questionnaire. The data gathered were analyzed using qualitative data analysis.
The result of this research indicated that most English teachers perceive teaching
online negatively due to two problems: one is technical disturbances that
happened very often resulting students’ absence and two is lack of interaction
between teacher and students. That is why, most teachers urge to re-implement
face to face learning. Most sample students responded the questionnaire about
English online learning positively but still found that they experienced no
improvement on their English skill therefore also perceiving online learning
negatively.
