Abstract

Fitria Wulandari (A 121 16 104). Teachers’ Perception Toward the Effective Techniques in Teaching Speaking Skill at SMA Negeri 1 Palu, under the Supervision of Sudarkam Mertosono.
This research aims to find out the effective techniques in teaching speaking skills at SMA Negeri 1 Palu. The respondents of this research were two English Teachers at SMA Negeri 1 Palu. This was a descriptive study using the qualitative method as the approach. The instruments of this research were an interview. The result of this research found that there were two techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking; discussion and using textbooks. Discussion technique is a technique in teaching in which the teacher gives a great opportunity to the students for having the scientific dialogue in gathering opinions, making the conclusion, or giving an alternative solution to a certain issue. Textbooks are important resources in teaching and learning English for teachers and students as they get benefits from them. Based on the benefits offered in textbooks, teachers' way of teaching usually depends on the use of textbooks in the classroom. The teachers use the material and followed the sequence of the textbook from the beginning until the last chapter of the textbook.
