THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SOCIAL MEDIA (INSTAGRAM) IN TEACHING WRITING SKILL OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 3 PALU

The objectivity of this research is to find out the effect of using instagram in
teaching writing skill of descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri
3 Palu.This research applied quasi-experimental design. The samples were 52
students; 26 students class X IIS III as the experimental group and 26 students of
class X MIA III as the control group selected using cluster sampling technique.
The data were analyzed statistically in order to find out the significant difference
of the students’ achievement before and after treatment. The mean score of the
experimental group on the pre-test was 27.27, while the control group was 45.77.
Furthermore, the mean score of the experimental group on the post-test was
62.42, while the control group was 55.83.In addition, the t-counted value was
2.02.By using degree of freedom (df) 40and 0.05 level of significance with onetailed
test, indicated that the value of t-table was 1.68.It is found that the tcounted
is higher than t-table. It means that the hypothesis was accepted. In other
words, using instagram can improve the writing skill of tenth grade students of
SMA Negeri 3 Palu.
