Abstract

This research aims to prove whether the use of Duolingo application as the learning media can increase students’ vocabulary in the English course of VII grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Banawa Tengah or not. This research used a quasi-experimental design and to determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The population of this research is all the VII grade students in the school year 2022/2023 with the amount 37 students. To collect the data, this research used vocabulary test as the instrument and the test is conducting twice, pre–test and post-test which contains 20 multiple choice and 10 numbers of completion test. Based on research, it can be concluded there is an improvement in experimental group who used Duolingo but not significantly increased. It is shown by calculation data using Arikunto’s (2006) formula. The result of t-table calculation is 6.064 and the result of t-table is 1.693. It is encouraged by the data that students' mean score on the post-test in the experimental group is 39.65 is higher than the student's mean score on the post-test in the control group 18.89 which has an enhancement in the amount of 13.32 %.
