USING INSTAGRAM TO IMPROVE WRITING SKILLS OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 4 SIGI

ABSTRACT

Faculty, Tadulako University, under the supervision of Rofiqoh and Andi Patmasari.
This research is aimed at proving whether using Instagram can improve
writing skills of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Sigi. This research used a
quasi-experimental research design with a sample of 50 students selected using a
cluster random sampling technique. In gathering the data, the instrument used was a
writing test administered twice as pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given to the
experimental and control groups before the treatment while the post-test was carried
out to both groups after the treatment. The mean score of the experimental group on
the pre-test was 38.82 and the control group was 45.87. Furthermore, the mean score
of the experimental group on the post-test was 64.32 while the control group was
59.54. By using a degree of freedom (df) 48 and a significance level of 0.05, it shows
that the t-counted value (4.48) is higher than the t-table value (1.678). It means that
the hypothesis of this research is accepted. In other words, using Instagram can
improve the writing skills of the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Sigi. The
implication of this finding for the teaching practice in a classroom is that the teacher
needs to use Instagram for better results of students’ writing quality.
