This study was aimed at increasing students‟ speaking skill through the application of the
Communicative Task Based (CTB) activities. This research employed collaborative Classroom Action
Research design in which the researcher acted as a teacher while her collaborative teachers acted as an
observer. This research was conducted in two cycles in which each cycle consisted of two meetings.
The action of planning, implementation, observation, analysis of data collected and reflection were
carried out in each of the cycles. The researcher applied the CTB activities in teaching and learning
process. The activities presented to the students were in the form of communicative task activities
which motivated and provoked the students to speak. The research findings showed that the
application of the CTB could increase the students‟ speaking skill. It is found that the students‟
achievement in speaking was increased from 43.33% or 13of 30 students achieved the minimum
criteria 61 in cycle 1 became 75.86% or 22 of 29 students in cycle 2. It was also found through the
result of observations analysis that the motivation and the participation of the students in participating
the CTB teaching and learning process were high. Furthermore, from the average of perception of the
students it was revealed that 91.33 % of the students agree that the CTB was useful and meaningful to
empower them increasing their speaking skill.
