Abstract

This research was an R&D on instructional devices in forms of teaching
materials, lesson plans, and students’ worksheets based on Kemp Model and
employing Direct Instruction Model on Biology Grade XI, under the topic of food
and Digestive System, which was, then, continued to quasi-experimental to find
out the effectiveness of the devices development. The research was done upon 56
Grade XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Sigi Biromaru during the even semester of
academic year 2010/2011 using counterbalanced measures design. The result 0f
descriptive analysis show that the category of this devices development is fairly
good with level of achievement of 85 % to 100 %. The students activities during
the instruction reflected a tendency to the student-centered instruction especially
in teacher modeling/demonstration by 13,17% and students collaboration in
discussing the result of group works by 13,16%. For learning achievement, the
students average grade reached 75,39 with learning thoroughness of 94,64%.
While the statistical analysis using SPSS v.16 on the level of significance a =.05
resulted in : (1) the value of t count >t table i.e 9.774 >2.021, means the development
of Biology instruction devices with Direct Instruction Model was effective
toward the learning achievement of Grade XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Sigi
Biromaru, (2) the value of t count > t table I,e 9.774 > 2.021, means there was a
difference in learning achievement between instruction using. Direct instruction
Model and the one that of conventional model. Direct Instruction Model get value
Rate 75,39 compared by on conventional method get value Rate 63,73. Therefore,
it can be concluded that the development of Biology instructional devices with
Direct Instruction Model is fairly effective toward the improvement of learning
achievement of Grade XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Sigi Biromaru
