Abstract

Mundiara (A 121 15 064) This skripsi entitled “ Increasing Vocabulary of Grade VII Students
at SMPN 2 Tinombo Selatan through Guessing Meaning Context”. Skripsi, Department of
English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education, Tadulako University.
The objective of this research is to find out whather the use of Guessing Meaning From
Context can increase the students‟ vocabulary of grade VII students at SMPN 2 Tinombo
Selatan or not. The researcher applied quasi-experimental research design which involved
experimental class and control class. The population of this research was the grade VII
students at SMPN 2 Tinombo Selatan. The researcher selected the sample by using cluster
random sampling technique. The sample of this research was the students of VII A
(experimental class) and VII C (control class) which ware both of the class consist of 29
students. the technique of data collection was test (pretest and posttest) the test was in form of
multiple choice and matching with meaning. The experimental class was treated by applying
guessing meaning context while the control class did not use this technique.the result of data
analysis showed that there was a significant difference between pretestand posttes. Looking
at experimental and control class, the researcher found that there is significant difference
beetween the results of the experimental class. It is proved by applying the testing hypothesis.
It shows that the mean score of expeimental class is significantly improved from 40.00 to
81.37, and the mean score of control class is improved from 40.55 to 48.62. The researcher
found that the t-counted 3.45 were higher than t-table 1.999. it means that the hypothesis is
accepted. In conclusion, the use of guessing meaning context is effective to increase
vocabulary of grade VII students at SMPN 2 Tinombo Selatan.
