The objective of this research is to find out that the use of ART (Ask, Read, Tell)
Strategy is effective in enhancing reading comprehension in recount text of the
eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Palu. Quasi experimental design is used in
this study, that is non equaivalent control group. The population of this research
is VIII at SMP Negeri 5 Palu. The sample of the study is selected by using
purposive sampling. VIII C is assigned as experimental group and VIII A is
assigned as control group. Both VIII C and VIII A consists of 19 students. The
data were collected through tests; pretest and posttest. In this research,
experimental group was taught with ART strategy while control group was not.
The mean score of the experimental group is 67.76 while in the control group is
55.79. The deviation score of both experimental group and control group is 11.97.
For further analysis, data indicate that t-counted (2.70) is greater than t-table
(2.02). Therefore, the hypothesis that was set up in this research is accepted. The
use of ART Strategy in teaching English has impact on enhancing the students’
reading comprehension.
