Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the use of Self-directed
Dialogue technique improves the second grade students’ speaking ability of SMP
Negeri 4 Palu or not. The pre-experimental research design was used in this
research that involved only one class. The population of this research was the
second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Palu that consisted of 11 classes. The
sample was VIII Delima that was drawn by applying purposive sampling
technique. The research data were collected by using oral test (pre-test and post�test). The data analyzed statistically. The pre-test was conducted to measure the
students’ speaking ability before the treatment while the post-test was conducted to
measure the students’ speaking ability after the treatment. The mean score in pre�test was 52.2 while post-test was 72.2. The result of the data analysis showed that
there was a significant improvement of the students speaking achievement result.
By applying two-tails test at 0.05 level of significance with 29 (30-1) degree of
freedom, the result of t-counted (6.59) was higher than t-table (2.045). It is
concluded that the hypothesis is accepted. Hence, the use of Self-directed Dialogue
technique improves the second grade students speaking ability of SMP Negeri 4
Palu.
