Abstract

Masni (A 121 15 102). Applying English Movie to Improve the Listening Skill of
Grade Ten Students of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palu. English Education Study
Program, Language and Art Education Department, Teacher Training and
Education Faculty, Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Jamiluddin as
the supervisior and Hasna as the co-supervisior.
The objective of this research is to find out whether applying English movie can
improve the listening skill of grade ten students at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Palu or
not. It is because the problem which is faced by the students in listening skill is
hard for them to understand what the speaker said, especially native speake, and
they also lack of vocabulary. Therefore, the researcher used English movie as
medium which can improve students’ listening skill in teaching and learning
process. The researcher used quasi experimental design. The researcher selected
the sample by using purposive sampling technique. The sample of the research
was the students of X TKJ B as the experimental class and X TKJ A as the control
class. The experimental class was treated by applying English movie while the
control class was not. The data were collected by giving the pre-test before the
treatment and the post-test after the treatment. The result of data analysis shows a
significant difference between the experimental and control class. The data
collection was analyzed statistically. It is proven that the data obtained shows that
the mean score of experimental class is significantly improved from 65.68 to
85.45, and the mean score of control class is improved from 74.25 to 82.5. By
applying degree of freedom (df) 40 and 0.05 level of significance, the researcher
found that the value of t-counted (3.49) is greater than the value of the t-table (1.68).
It means that the hypothesis is accepted. In conclusion, the applying English
movie is effective to improve students’ listening skill of grade ten student of SMK
Muhammadiyah 1 Palu.
