The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the summarizing
strategy on improving the reading comprehension of the ten grade students at
SMA Negeri 5 Palu. This study was based on a preliminary investigation which
revealed that the students still had difficulties in comprehending texts, finding
main ideas and detailed information, and dealing with limited vocabulary. The
researcher applied the summarizing strategy as a technique to help improve the
students’ reading comprehension. This study employed a quasi?experimental
design. The population of this study consisted of the ten grade students of SMA
Negeri 5 Palu, and two classes, X M5 and X M3, were selected as the samples,
comprising 35 and 32 students respectively. To collect the data, the researcher
administered pre?tests and post?tests to measure the students’ ability before and
after the treatment. The results of the data analysis showed a significant
improvement in reading comprehension. The mean score of the experimental
group increased from 68.85 to 79.06, whereas the mean score of the control group
changed from 69.33 to 67.52. The data analysis yielded a significance value
(2?tailed) of 0.000, which is lower than 0.050, indicating that the alternative
hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the
summarizing strategy significantly improves students’ reading comprehension.
