EFEKTIVITAS DISKUSI KELOMPOK DALAM MENGEMBANGKAN KETERAMPILAN BERBICARA SISWA KELAS TUJUH SMP NEGERI 7 PALU

Discussion in Developing Speaking Skills of Grade Seven Students at SMP N 7
Palu” under the supervision of Abd. Kamaruddin and Fadhilah Zamzam
This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the group discussion method in
developing students’ speaking skills, particularly in terms of fluency and
comprehensibility. The research was conducted with grade seven students at SMP
Negeri 7 Palu. The sample of this study consisted of two classes selected through
purposive sampling, namely class VII G as the experimental class and class VII F
as the control class, with a total of 58 students. This research employed a quasiexperimental design using pre-test and post-test procedures. The data were
collected through speaking tests which were assessed based on students’ fluency
and comprehensibility. The experimental class received treatment using the group
discussion method, while the control class was taught using conventional
instruction. The findings revealed that students who were taught using the group
discussion method showed a greater improvement in their speaking performance
compared to those who were taught without the method. The result of the statistical
analysis using the t-test indicated that the group discussion method was effective in
improving students’ speaking fluency and comprehensibility. Therefore, it can be
concluded that the implementation of group discussion provides meaningful
opportunities for students to practice speaking, interact with peers, and develop
their ability to communicate ideas more smoothly and clearly in English.
