PENERAPAN BERCERITA SEBAGAI STRATEGI UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KETERAMPILAN BERBICARA SISWA KELAS DELAPAN SMP KRISTEN BALA KESELAMATAN PALU

This study aims to analyze the effect of the storytelling strategy on the speaking
ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Kristen Bala Keselamatan Palu. The
research employed a quasi-experimental method using a pre-test–post-test control
group design. The population of this study consisted of all eighth-grade students
of SMP Kristen Bala Keselamatan Palu in the 2025/2026 academic year, totaling
89 students distributed across three classes. The sample was selected using a
cluster random sampling technique, resulting in two classes as the research
samples: one class as the experimental group and one class as the control group.
The experimental group was taught using the storytelling strategy, while the
control group was taught using a traditional teaching approach. The research
data were collected through speaking tests administered before and after the
treatment. The results of the study indicate that there was a significant difference
in speaking ability between students taught using the storytelling strategy and
those taught using the traditional teaching approach. Statistical analysis revealed
that the t-observed value (3) was higher than the t-table value (2) at the 5%
significance level with 58 degrees of freedom. Based on these findings, it can be
concluded that the storytelling strategy has a significant effect on improving the
speaking ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Kristen Bala Keselamatan Palu.
